NiSi Filters Medium Nano IR GND8 (0.9) · REVIEW
I'm proudly sponsored by NiSi filters. They kindly sent me one of the first filters of the brandnew „NiSi Medium GND8 (0.9) Filter“ to test it. It's great to see how NiSi is improving their product range and caring about the opinions from the ambassadors. A few month back there was the idea to extend the filter system with a new graduated filter between the soft transition and the hard transition to have the best options for every scene. The new Medium-Graduated ND filter is, like all the other nice NiSi filters, made of optical glass, further processed and specially coated.
Just one week after receiving the filter, I traveled to the northern coast of France and used the new filter a lot to test it for every different situation.
Why do you need a NiSi GND filter?
Everybody who loves landscape photography, knows the problem about the limited dynamic range of the cameras. To overcome this issue, you can go with HDR-imaging (combining multiple exposures in post-processing) or you use optical filters. I prefer to go with the second option, to be able to see the almost perfect results right in camera with less post-processing needed.
GND (graduated neutral density) filters are the most important filters in landscape and seascape photography. You need them to darken the bright sky part of your picture to not get an overexposed sky. The NiSi GND hard is used for scenes with a clearly visible transition on the horizon like on the sea and the NiSi GND soft is used for example for scenes with objects reaching far into the sky.
Now they developed the new filter with Medium transition to combine the advantages of the other filters. So it suits many situations where you have a horizon with some objects reaching a bit into the sky like in the mountains or a lighthouse at the sea for example.
Because these filters were used to get the best possible exposure captured in the camera, you should pay attention on quality at these tools. The NiSi ND and GND filters produce the cleanest natural colors I have seen so far. No noticeable color cast or reduction in sharpness! Also they have a nano coating to reduce reflections and flare and also they can be cleaned easily. They feature a good IR-cutting to avoid the infrared light reaching the sensor, which is important when shooting long exposures in low-light conditions.
The packaging of the NiSi equipment is well thought out and features nice little details. The Filters come in nice leather pouches with a very soft fabric surface inside.
My experience with the new NiSi Medium GND8 (0.9)
In short: The new Medium GND is amazing!
In detail: Like expected, the filter fits right into the product range between the other well known Soft, Hard and Reverse NiSi filters with clean natural colors and no reduction in sharpness!
Because of the special multilayer nano coating, reflections and flare are marginal and the filter can be cleaned easily. Also they feature a good IR-cutting to avoid the infrared light reaching the sensor, which is important when shooting longer exposures.
On my trip to France I tested the new Medium GND extensively and it suited almost every landscape scene I visited, sometimes I combined it with the Soft GND. It was a lot of fun to use this filter because the results were great and needed a bit less time in post-processing due to the Medium transition.
The packaging of the NiSi equipment is well thought out and features nice little details. The Filters come in nice leather pouches with a very soft fabric surface inside. To store and carry the filters safe and compact, the company also provides a little leathered filter case with slots for the filters, which is great because the filters surface don't touch anything… just like inside the holder, so they can't scratch!
